 THE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC MUSEUM IN ALBI

A remarkable building

Zoom

The former Bishops' Palace , built in the 13th century, is the unlikely setting for the work of the Albi-born painter, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec .

For a new renovated museum

Zoom

Toulouse-lautrec museum offers new galleries to discover a new visit.

It's now one of the most important contemporary museums.

An innovative body of work

Zoom

More than 1000 works, including the 31 famous posters, are kept within the walls of this impressive fortress.
This body of work forms the largest public collection in the world devoted to Toulouse-Lautrec.

The Toulouse-Lautrec Museum enables visitors to follow the development of this atypical artist, from his juvenilia to the world of show-business, theatre and café-concerts.

Every phase of his prolific output is represented.

A colourful personality

Born in Albi in 1864, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is one of the most popular of French painters , as much for his talent as for his personality.
On his death in 1901, the quintessential body of his work remained in his studio. His mother, the Countess Adèle de Céleyran, left this exceptional collection to the City of Albi in 1922.

Refurbishment of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum

Zoom

Major refurbishment work on the museum was undertaken in 2002, enabling restoration of the Palais de la Berbie and revision of the presentation of the museum's collection.

The 1st stage of the works, completed in autumn 2004, consists of a new visitor reception area et and a new presentation format for the collection : his juvenilia, a room containing portraits, and the world of the brothels, in rooms of the palace that were previously inaccessible to visitors.

As a final part of its current reconfiguration works, the Toulouse Lautrec Museum will reach the last stage of its remodeling process in 2008: it will be mostly centered on the 2nd and 3rd floors
